Vimeo alternatives in 2026: nine video hosts, compared
People leave Vimeo for three reasons. The On Demand storefront closes on 20 November 2026. The security controls a paid library needs sit on Vimeo's upper tiers, with DRM Enterprise-only and no published price. Or the bill no longer matches how the videos are used.
We make StreamVault, one of the nine. Every fact about the others comes from our side-by-side page for that platform, which shows the date each price was checked, and each entry says who the platform suits best, including where it beats us. Prices change: check the vendor's pricing page before you decide.
Short version: marketing video, look at Wistia or SproutVideo. Ad-funded media, JW Player. Building from parts, Bunny Stream. Video people pay for, you want studio DRM and a viewer watermark on a plan you can afford.

Each option in a paragraph
StreamVault
Best for: Courses, member libraries and client video that people pay for, embedded on your own site or course platform.
Watch out for: It is a host, not a shop: there is no storefront or checkout, and no live streaming. You sell through your own site, Stripe or your course platform.
Wistia
Best for: Marketing video: in-player lead capture, CRM sync and experiments, when the budget is comfortable.
Watch out for: Since its March 2026 repricing the entry paid plan is $79/mo billed annually ($99 monthly) for 250 GB and 1 TB, with CRM integrations a $250/mo add-on. No DRM or viewer watermark on self-serve plans.
SproutVideo
Best for: Business video that is free to watch: live streaming, a hosted video website, SSO for viewers, and support answered by people.
Watch out for: No DRM on any plan: download protection is AES-128 encrypted HLS with signed URLs, and the dynamic watermark starts on the $95/mo Tree plan. (Prices checked 22 September 2026.)
VdoCipher
Best for: DRM-first hosting where the dynamic watermark is the feature you are buying.
Watch out for: The $149/year Starter includes 1 TB of delivery for the whole year and 100 GB of storage; DRM is an account-level setting. (Prices checked 14 September 2026.)
Gumlet
Best for: One vendor for images and video, or a large audience: its DRM add-on includes 100,000 views a month.
Watch out for: DRM is a $99/mo add-on on top of a hosting plan (after it cut prices by up to 70% in May 2026). (Prices checked 14 September 2026.)
Bunny Stream
Best for: Developers building a video product from parts: free encoding, storage from $0.01/GB and delivery from $0.005/GB.
Watch out for: The free MediaCage Basic protection is clear-key encryption, whose key reaches the page. Real DRM is MediaCage Enterprise: $99/mo base plus $0.005 per licence, Widevine and FairPlay only. (Prices checked 22 September 2026.)
JW Player
Best for: Ad-supported media at scale: server-side ad insertion and a large publisher ad stack.
Watch out for: Signed playback and Studio DRM sit on higher, quote-based tiers.
DynTube
Best for: A budget host that ships signed URLs, domain whitelisting and watermarking on every plan.
Watch out for: Lighter on the operations layer: bulk management, batch APIs, channels and custom domains.
Kinescope
Best for: Teams that want multi-DRM and are comfortable with metered, pay-per-GB delivery.
Watch out for: Metered delivery means the bill scales with every view.
When staying on Vimeo is the right call
If what you want is a public presence rather than a protected library, Vimeo is still very good at it: a discoverable profile, a creative community, review-and-approval workflows for production teams, and stock and editing tools in the same place. None of the platforms above tries to replace that. And if your videos are free to watch and you only need them to play well, YouTube is free.
How to choose in four questions
- Do people pay for these videos? If yes, you need protection that survives a determined viewer: studio DRM so downloaders get nothing and most screen recordings come out black, and a viewer-identifying watermark for the phone camera that DRM cannot stop. See how each layer stops downloads.
- Do you need to take payments? Vimeo On Demand took the payment for you. The hosts here do not; your site, Stripe or your course platform does. The Vimeo On Demand checklist covers both halves of the move.
- How does the bill grow? Fixed plans, a yearly delivery allowance, per-GB metering and per-licence DRM fees all look similar at ten viewers and very different at ten thousand. Work out your monthly viewing before comparing entry prices; our DRM pricing comparison does the arithmetic for the DRM options.
- Where will the videos play? If they live inside Teachable, Kajabi, Thinkific, Podia or Circle, check that the host embeds cleanly there and can lock playback to that domain. Our integration guides show how that works for each platform.
Questions
What is the best alternative to Vimeo?
It depends on what the video is for. For marketing video, Wistia or SproutVideo. For ad-supported media at scale, JW Player. For building your own product from infrastructure parts, Bunny Stream. For courses and other video people pay for, look for studio DRM and a viewer watermark on the plan you can afford: StreamVault includes both from $12 a month, VdoCipher from $149 a year, and Gumlet as a $99-a-month add-on.
Is there a free alternative to Vimeo?
For videos anyone may watch, YouTube is free. For anything people pay for, free options are not private: an unlisted link can be forwarded and embedded anywhere. The cheapest paid infrastructure on this list is Bunny Stream (pay as you go with a $1 monthly minimum, checked 22 September 2026), but its free protection tier is clear-key encryption.
Which Vimeo alternatives have DRM?
StreamVault (Widevine, PlayReady and FairPlay on every plan from $12 a month), VdoCipher (Widevine and FairPlay on its $149-a-year Starter), Gumlet (a $99-a-month add-on), Bunny Stream (MediaCage Enterprise, $99 a month base), Kinescope (paid plans) and JW Player (higher, quote-based tiers). SproutVideo offers none, and Wistia none on self-serve plans. On Vimeo itself, DRM is Enterprise-only with no published price. DRM stops downloaders, and on most devices a screen recording comes out black; it does not stop a phone camera pointed at the screen, which is what a viewer watermark is for.
Can I move my Vimeo library without downloading it first?
To StreamVault, yes: paste your Vimeo links and we fetch, convert and subtitle the videos at no charge, then email you when the library is ready. Other hosts have their own import routes; check whether they fetch from links or need the files.
Is Vimeo shutting down?
No. Vimeo itself is staying. What is closing is Vimeo On Demand, the storefront for selling videos: it goes offline on 20 November 2026. If you sold through it, you need both a new host and a new way to take payment; none of the hosts above is a drop-in storefront.
Studio DRM from $12 a month, and we move your Vimeo library for free
Widevine, PlayReady and FairPlay on every plan, a viewer-identifying watermark, member gating and domain locking. Paste your Vimeo links and we fetch, convert and subtitle the lot. 7-day trial, no card, and DRM works during the trial.
