Vimeo On Demand is closing on 20 November 2026. Here is what to do, in order.
Vimeo is retiring its On Demand storefront. If you sold or rented videos through it, the money stops in September, the last payout arrives in October, and in November your buyers lose access. This is the checklist we walk every migrating creator through — it applies whichever host you move to.
The dates
22 August 2026 — Uploads stopped
No new titles can be added to Vimeo On Demand.
21 September 2026 — Sales stop
No new purchases, rentals or subscriptions. Existing subscriptions stop renewing.
21 October 2026 — Final payout
Vimeo sends the last earnings payment automatically.
20 November 2026 — Storefronts go offline
On Demand pages close. Buyers who purchased through Vimeo lose access.
Vimeo itself is not shutting down. Only the On Demand storefront closes.
The checklist
- 1
Export your title list today
In Vimeo On Demand, open each title and note the video IDs, descriptions, pricing and which videos belong to which package. There is no bulk export of the storefront structure, so a spreadsheet you build now is the only record you will have after 20 November.
- 2
Get the original files out before the download links lapse
Vimeo's download links expire. Download your originals now — or use a host that fetches from your Vimeo links for you — rather than a few at a time over the coming weeks. If you only have the Vimeo-encoded copies, that is still fine; keep the highest rendition available.
- 3
Decide who your buyers are after the shutdown
Anyone who bought a title through Vimeo On Demand loses access when the storefront closes. Vimeo does not hand you their emails. If you want to honour those purchases, you need to reach those customers yourself, now, while your On Demand pages are still up and you can post a notice on them.
- 4
Pick where payments will happen — separately from where video lives
This is the decision people get wrong. Vimeo On Demand did two jobs: it took money and it streamed video. Most replacements do one. Stripe Payment Links, Gumroad, Teachable, Kajabi, Podia or a membership plugin on your own site can take the money; a protected video host serves the files. Choose both, and check the two work together (the host must let you embed a protected player on your checkout platform's pages).
- 5
Insist on real protection this time
Your paid videos were behind Vimeo's rental window; on your own site they are behind whatever your new host offers. Signed, expiring playback URLs and a domain whitelist are the minimum. For a course or a paid library, hardware DRM (Widevine, PlayReady, FairPlay) is what makes downloaders and screen recorders come away with nothing. Ask any host directly whether it offers these on your price tier, not only on 'Enterprise'.
- 6
Re-embed, then redirect
Once the library is re-hosted, update every embed and link on your site and in your emails. Keep a list of your old Vimeo On Demand URLs and, if your site can redirect, point each one at the new page so old links from social posts and search results still land somewhere.
- 7
Tell people twice
Once now — 'this is moving, here is where' — and once after the move with the new link. Buyers who ignore the first email will act on the second one when their old link stops working.
If you move to StreamVault
Steps 2, 5 and 6 are done for you: paste your Vimeo links, we fetch and convert every file, generate subtitles, and put the library behind DRM, signed URLs and domain whitelisting — free, at any size. We host and protect; you keep taking payments wherever you already do. Plans from $12/mo with a 7-day trial and no card.
Questions people are asking
Is Vimeo shutting down?
No. Vimeo continues. What is closing is Vimeo On Demand — the storefront for selling and renting videos. Your videos remain in your Vimeo account; the shop, and your buyers' access through it, is what ends on 20 November 2026.
What are the exact dates?
Uploads stopped on 22 August 2026, sales stop on 21 September 2026, the final payout is on 21 October 2026, and storefronts go offline on 20 November 2026.
Will my buyers keep access to what they bought?
Not through Vimeo — when the storefront closes, access closes with it. Keeping past buyers watching is on you: reach them, and give them a new place to watch.
Can I move my library to StreamVault?
Yes. Paste your Vimeo links and StreamVault fetches, converts and subtitles every video, then puts it behind DRM, signed URLs and domain whitelisting. The migration is free at any library size. StreamVault hosts and protects video; it does not take payments from viewers, so you keep selling through your own site, Stripe, Teachable or your LMS.
